Hi, I’m Laura Eklund and I was born in Seattle and I’ve lived in Washington state my whole life. My profession and passion has been as an artist. I have done commercial work, planned art festivals and taught paint and sips. I was first introduced to permaculture eight years ago. In 2012 my family and I went to the Permaculture convergence and it changed our lives. Over the next five years we turned our suburban residential quarter acre into a lush food forest. Eventually that led us to sell our house and pursue the goal of purchasing degraded land and homesteading. We found ten acres on the Key Peninsula, nine of which had been clear cut. In addition to buying logged land we were also moving off grid. This inspired me to get my permaculture certification. My personal interest in permaculture comes from a drive to help heal our natural world. The way we extract and use resources damages and destroys the nature growing on our planet. Permaculture offers solutions to the problems that arise out of the carelessness and ignorance of our current practices. Permaculture is a way of thinking that incorporates mindfulness, observation, deep consideration, and moral implication from which the best decisions can be made. It’s a path that I take in my life that can yield the best results for all things around me including myself. The connections to my habitat and neighborhood are vital to my own life. These connections have the greatest impact in my interactions with external environment. I’m working to create these loving relationships between me and my neighbors, the land, and the earth.
